Aging signs on the eyelids can add even more years to your face. Sagging eyelids, puffiness, undereye bags, and wrinkles can make you look perpetually tired. These issues can even occur in younger people. When puffiness and eye bulges do not go away when you try simple cosmetic treatments, the only effective remedy is blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery).
The Problem of Aging Eyelids
Aging affects all parts of the face, including the eyelids. The skin loses its suppleness and elasticity over the years. Without proper elasticity, the skin begins to droop.
Excess sagging skin on the upper lids can make your eyes look droopy, hide the natural shape of your eyes, and even interfere with your vision. Extra skin on the lower lids can appear as bulges and wrinkles. Droopiness in the lower lids can also reveal the white area below your iris.
Fat can accumulate on the upper and lower lids in the form of eyelid puffiness. The skin holding the fat in place can weaken and allow fat to seep through and collect on the eyelids. Bulges can grow if not corrected in time as the fat continues to collect in the area.
Blepharoplasty Surgery
Blepharoplasty is the surgical solution for aging eyelids. Blepharoplasty incisions are quite small and are camouflaged in the natural eyelid contours. For upper-eyelid surgery, Dr. Morwood will make an incision across the natural crease at the top of the upper lid. Through this incision, he will remove excess tissues and tighten sagging skin and muscle tissues.
For lower-eyelid surgery, Dr. Morwood will make an incision either just below the lash line or on the inside of the lid. Through this, he will correct the problem of bulging fat deposits. Excess fat may be redistributed in order to maintain proper proportions. With the lower-lash-line incision, excess skin can also be removed from the lower lids.
The Healing Process
The blepharoplasty incisions are closed with sutures, which need to be in place for a week or so. You will need to refrain from activities that can tire your eyes until your eyelids heal. You will also need to keep your eyelids protected with sunscreen and sunglasses for a time.
Once the surgical swelling subsides, you can see the results of your blepharoplasty. Your eyelids can appear smoother and more defined. Without the weight of sagging eyelids, your eyes can appear rejuvenated. With no eyelid puffiness, your whole face can look refreshed and youthful.
The results of blepharoplasty can last for many years. The surgery doesn’t halt the aging process, but it can correct all previous signs of aging and give new life to your eyelids.
